Johnny Hunter – Want (A Late Album Review)

As we approach the first anniversary of the release of Johnny Hunter’s “Want” back in June 2022, Trash Disco thought it appropriate to revisit the album on the show and finally write the review I’d meant to write when it came out.

The album, as expected, features a number of tracks we’ve heard before combined with freshly recorded tracks.

The album begins full throttle with the title track, which is one of the new ones. Years ago I heard an early JH track called One Of A Kind. It was early in their career, so it was a little raw and rough around the edges. I remember thinking it would be great if they re-recorded it. I feel I got my wish with Want, which feels like a “Son of One of A Kind”.

Next we move to familiar territory, with Endless Days, followed by The Floor, which even in this early stage of Johnny Hunter’s career could be considered JH classics.

Things tone down slightly for Life, before moving on to the lush sounding Dreams, which became the lead single from the album. This is pure pop songwriting, within the realms of dream pop. In fact, their songwriting has improved in leaps and bounds over the years.

Fracture, another new track is a slower track, but builds up slowly and the addition of synths, rarely used on JH songs, really enhances this one.

Cry Like A Man brings us back to classic JH, before finishing off the album with Eternity Fades. Take Off and huge sounding Clover.

With the exception of “Life” Johnny Hunter have managed to combine the old and the new to create a consistent sounding album with rocking highs and delicate ballads.

There are a number of cracking previously released tracks not present here, and I am hoping they will make an appearance on their second album. Which I am hoping is coming soon.

Overall, this is a great album. Johnny Hunter continually steers away from the ordinary with their songwriting and performance style. Long may they continue.

7/10
